ISLAMABAD: The federal government has announced that it will file a review petition before the Supreme Court against its recent order concerning the medical treatment of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan.

Speaking about Khan’s case and the court proceedings, Federal Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar said the government had thoroughly reviewed the Supreme Court’s judgment and order and completed legal consultations on the matter.

Tarar said the government would pursue the legal route and approach the Supreme Court itself to seek a review of the decision.

The law minister also raised legal and administrative questions regarding the scope of the court’s order, asking whether the directives would apply to all prisoners facing similar health-related issues.

He pointed out that thousands of prisoners across the country suffer from various medical conditions and require treatment and medical care.

According to Tarar, under existing laws and prison rules, convicted prisoners are generally provided medical treatment at government hospitals.

He said the situation arising from the Supreme Court’s order in Imran Khan’s case had prompted the government to return to the apex court for further legal clarification.

The development comes after the Supreme Court directed authorities to arrange medical treatment for Imran Khan at Shifa International Hospital and issued a number of directives concerning his medical care and family meetings.
