LAHORE: Begum Nafisa Khalid, a founding leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and former member of the National Assembly, has passed away, the party and political leaders said on Monday.

Khalid was remembered for her contributions to the strengthening of democracy, promotion of democratic values and her role in political and parliamentary affairs.

The PPP’s central, provincial and district leadership expressed deep sorrow over her death and extended condolences to her family. Party leaders said her democratic struggle and political services would be remembered.

National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq also expressed grief over Khalid’s death, paying tribute to her political, parliamentary and social contributions.

Sadiq said Khalid had rendered valuable services for strengthening democracy and promoting democratic values in the country. He said her contributions would be remembered for a long time.

The National Assembly speaker conveyed condolences to Khalid’s family, including former MNA and National Assembly Special Secretary Syed Shamon Hashmi, and other relatives.

Her funeral prayer will be offered after Maghrib prayers today at Imambargah Jagir Ali Akbar on Jati Umra Road in Lahore. She will subsequently be laid to rest at the AWT Phase 2, Jati Umra B Block graveyard.

The speaker prayed for the departed soul to be granted a high مقام in Jannat-ul-Firdous and for the bereaved family to be given patience to bear the loss.
