ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet has approved the National Housing Policy 2026, paving the way for measures aimed at promoting affordable and sustainable housing across Pakistan after a gap of nearly 25 years.
The previous National Housing Policy was approved in 2001, making the latest policy a major development for the country’s housing and urban development sector.
The new policy focuses on promoting access to adequate, affordable and sustainable housing for citizens. It also seeks to improve access to housing opportunities, basic amenities and supporting infrastructure.
The National Housing Policy 2026 covers key areas of the housing and urban development sectors through nine broad thematic areas, according to officials.
Federal Minister for Housing and Works Riaz Hussain Pirzada congratulated the ministry’s Policy and Planning Wing for preparing the policy document.
He said all relevant stakeholders were consulted during the formulation process and described the approval of the policy as a historic milestone for the ministry.
The minister noted that Pakistan had been without a comprehensive national housing policy for almost a quarter of a century. He said the new framework would provide direction for addressing the country’s housing shortage and growing urban challenges.
He expressed hope that the new policy would help promote affordable and sustainable residential development across the country.
