Egypt has introduced a new QR code-based tourist visa system at Cairo International Airport, allowing eligible visitors to obtain their visas digitally either before departure or upon arrival.
The system, which came into effect on August 1, is part of the government’s broader efforts to modernise immigration services, simplify entry procedures and enhance the travel experience for international visitors.
Travellers can apply for tourist visas through an official government mobile application, an online platform or self-service kiosks installed at the airport’s arrival terminals. Instead of traditional visa stickers, visitors will receive digitally generated QR codes to facilitate faster immigration clearance.
According to Egyptian authorities, the initiative is aimed at reducing waiting times, improving border management and supporting the country’s goal of attracting 30 million tourists annually by 2030.
Tourism and Antiquities Minister Sherif Fathy said the digital visa system forms part of a wider strategy to strengthen Egypt’s tourism sector by expanding digital services and making entry procedures more efficient. Eligible travellers can generate their digital entry permits up to 48 hours before departure through the approved channels.
