LONDON: Veteran batter Joe Root has been appointed as England’s Test captain for a second stint, while former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming has been named the team’s new head coach as part of a major overhaul of the Test setup.
The appointments come after significant changes in England’s Test structure, following the departure of Brendon McCullum from the Test coaching role and Ben Stokes’ retirement from international cricket earlier this month.
The 35-year-old has led the team in 65 tests, which is an England record, and even led the team as a temporary captain in the second Test of England against New Zealand.
Root will take up the captaincy role again when England plays a three-test series against Pakistan next month.
Fleming, 53, replaces Brendon McCullum as England’s Test head coach. The former New Zealand skipper brings extensive coaching experience, including a successful tenure in franchise cricket.
McCullum, who was removed from the Test coaching role after England’s series defeat against New Zealand, will continue as England’s white-ball coach.
