Regular consumption of grapes may help improve joint health and reduce the risk of joint-related problems, according to a new analysis by Chinese researchers.
Joint pain affects millions of people worldwide and is particularly common among older adults. Researchers say a naturally occurring compound found in grapes and berries may play a beneficial role in protecting joint health.
The study reviewed findings from previous research on resveratrol, a polyphenol known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Resveratrol has been widely studied over the past several decades for its potential health benefits, including its role in slowing cellular ageing.
According to the researchers, chronic inflammation is one of the leading causes of joint disorders, and resveratrol appears to help suppress inflammation through multiple biological pathways.
The researchers noted that although resveratrol is not easily absorbed by the body and is rapidly metabolised by the liver, existing evidence suggests it may still help protect against joint pain and injury.
They said further clinical studies are needed to better understand the compound’s effectiveness and determine its potential role in the prevention and treatment of joint diseases.
