PESHAWAR: Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) on Wednesday warned of rising water levels in rivers, streams and storm drains in glacier areas of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
Issuing a statement on rising water level in some glacier areas, it said that due to rapid melting of glaciers and snow and recent rains, water flow in many waterways has reached high levels, therefore, there is a risk of medium to high level flooding in sensitive valleys and low-lying areas.
The risk of erosion of river banks, landslides and local flooding may increase, saying the relevant agencies continuously monitor sensitive areas and issue timely warnings to vulnerable populations. The PDMA further said that residents of low-lying areas should be careful, livestock and essential goods should be moved to safe and higher places. The public should avoid going near fast-flowing rivers, streams and storm drains and unnecessary travel.
Moreover, it cautioned tourists and travelers to avoid camping and trekking near rivers, glacial lakes and narrow mountain valleys in sensitive areas. It directed the concerned departments to ensure availability of rescue personnel and necessary equipment to deal with emergencies.
It is worth mentioning here that nationwide monsoon spell has so far claimed 57 lives and injured 148 people since June 26, as heavy rains continue to trigger fatal incidents and widespread damage across the country, NDMA said in its latest report.
