PESHAWAR: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned of a heightened risk of landslides and rockfalls in vulnerable areas of upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as heavy rainfall continues to affect the region.
According to the weather department, intense rain could also trigger flash floods in the province’s upper districts.
It warned that strong winds and lightning during the forecast period may damage weak structures, including solar panels, electricity poles, and billboards.
The PMD said skies are expected to remain partly cloudy across most districts of the province, while hot and humid conditions are likely to persist in the southern districts.
Rain accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms is forecast for Upper and Lower Chitral, Upper and Lower Dir, Swat, Shangla, Malakand, Buner, Bajaur, Upper and Lower Kohistan, Kolai-Palas, and Torghar.
Similar weather conditions are expected in Battagram, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Mardan, Swabi, Mohmand, Khyber, Peshawar, Nowshera, Charsadda, Kohat, Karak, Hangu, Kurram, Orakzai, and Bannu.
The department also forecast rain accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms in Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, and the Waziristan districts, with isolated areas likely to receive heavy downpours.
Rainfall recorded over the previous 24 hours included 59mm in Kakul, 29mm in Bajaur, 13mm in Malam Jabba, 12mm in Bannu, 7mm each in Dir and Kalam, 5mm each in Swat and Dera Ismail Khan, and 2mm in Peshawar.
Maximum temperatures recorded on the previous day were 40°C in Dera Ismail Khan, 38°C in Chitral, 36°C in Peshawar, 34°C each in Malam Jabba and Bannu, and 27°C in Kalam.
