PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly Speaker Babar Saleem Swati has called a meeting of parliamentary leaders to discuss the proposed bill concerning the privileges and benefits of provincial lawmakers following consultations with Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and concerns raised by civil society groups.

The meeting will be held on Monday, July 13, 2026, in the Speaker’s Chamber of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly where all political parties of the provincial legislature will discuss the proposed bill in detail.

According to the spokesman of the assembly, this session will be focused on the examination of different clauses of the bill in view of the concerns and suggestions made by civil society, press persons, and other interested parties. The aim is to evolve a legislation which is balanced and practical as per expectations of the people.

In addition, provincial information minister Shafiullah Jan, law minister Aftab Alam, and chief whip of the KP assembly Akbar Ayub Khan will also attend the meeting.

At the meeting, the parliamentary leaders will discuss the clauses of the proposed bill and prepare a strategy for the future.

Addressing the media prior to the meeting, Speaker Babar Saleem Swati said that the provincial assembly is primarily a public body and that all legislation must be made for the benefit of the people and must be transparent and democratic.

He said that public confidence and feedback from civil society remain important for the assembly.

“In case the concerns and suggestions arise from various segments of society concerning any proposed legislation, then it is the duty of the parliament to listen to these concerns and suggestions and make sure that the legislation being made is in accordance with the public wishes, constitutional requirements, and democratic practices,” Swati said.

The proposed bill of privileges and benefits has become a matter of public debate.
