TEHRAN: Iranian authorities have announced the funeral and burial schedule for former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, with an estimated 20 million mourners expected to participate in the ceremonies.

According to Iranian news sources, the first mourning events will take place starting on July 4 in the cities of Tehran and Qom, followed by Khamenei’s burial in his native city of Mashhad on July 9.

The Iranian government has already initiated the organization of security and logistic operations which would provide for the safety and smooth transportation of millions of mourners and guests. According to some reports, another commemorative event could be arranged in the Iraqi holy city of Karbala, but there is no official information about it yet.

According to Iranian authorities, Ali Khamenei was killed in an American and Israeli airstrike on his residence in Tehran in late February. The man was 86 years old at the time of his death.

According to the Iranian news sources, the reason behind the postponement of the funeral ceremony was due to the presence of some security issues along with the attendance of high-ranking officials. The schedule of the prayer for the funeral has been decided.
