LONDON: British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has announced his resignation, bringing an end to his tenure as the leader of the United Kingdom after nearly two years in office.

Speaking to the media on Monday, Starmer said he had informed the King of his decision earlier in the day and would remain in office until the transfer of power is completed.

“I have informed His Majesty this morning of my resignation,” Starmer said. “I will continue to serve as Prime Minister and carry out my duties until the transition is finalized.”

The outgoing prime minister became emotional while delivering his remarks and pledged his full support to his successor.

“I will fully support the next Prime Minister and cooperate with the incoming government,” he said.

Reports in the British media had suggested a day earlier that Starmer had decided to step down and had held consultations with cabinet members and advisers regarding the move.

Reflecting on his time in office, Starmer said he had taken office with optimism despite criticism of the Labour Party’s prospects.

“When I came into office two years ago, I was repeatedly told that our party was weak and finished,” he said. “Over the past two years, we worked to strengthen the economy, improve infrastructure, and serve the interests of the country.”

Starmer highlighted increased defense spending, efforts to protect children from the harmful effects of social media, stronger ties with international allies, and measures aimed at improving public welfare as key achievements of his administration.

He acknowledged that meaningful reforms require time to deliver results.

“Change does not happen overnight,” Starmer said. “It takes time.”

Calls for Starmer’s resignation had intensified following the Labour Party’s poor performance in recent local elections, which fueled criticism from political opponents and sections of his own party.

The process for selecting and appointing a new prime minister is expected to begin in the coming days.
