SHANGLA: Six children died, and one was injured after the roof of a muddy house collapsed in the Basi area of Alpurai Tehsil, Shangla district, police officials said on Tuesday.
According to police sources, the incident occurred when the roof of an already house caved in while the children were inside. Residents rushed to the site and recovered all bodies from the debris before rescue teams arrived.
Their father had passed away a few years ago, leaving them in the care of their family. Police confirmed the identities of the deceased include Nazra Bibi, 13 years, Samira Bibi, 14 years, Nayab Bibi, 8 years, Haya Noor, 5 years, Umair Bibi, 13 years, and Rizwan, 5 years. Another girl sustained injuries in the collapse and was shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Her condition was reported as stable.
Locals said heavy rain and the poor condition of mud-built houses in the mountainous area often lead to such tragedies. Residents have repeatedly urged the government to launch housing schemes for poor families in Shangla to prevent future incidents. District administration officials have expressed grief over the loss and said financial assistance will be provided to the affected family under government relief programs.
The deaths of six siblings from one family have left the Basi community devastated. Shangla, a hilly district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, sees frequent roof collapses during the rainy season due to old construction and a lack of resources for safer housing.
