PDMA issues GLOF alert for KP

PESHAWAR: The Provincial Emergency Operations Centre and Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) have issued an alert regarding the risk of glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) in the upper districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to the PDMA statement issued on Thursday, the increase in temperature in most districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa by May 31 is likely to increase the rate of melting of snow and glaciers, and there is a risk of GLOF incidents.
It said heavy rains and heavy rains are likely in the upper districts of Chitral, Dir, Swat and Kohistan.
The risk of flash floods has increased due to the sudden increase in temperature and rain.
The PDMA has directed the district administration to ensure emergency measures and advance preparedness.
The relevant institutions and the district administration have been instructed to increase surveillance in sensitive areas and keep the timely warning system active.
Instructions have been issued to rescue personnel and related institutions to ensure the availability of machinery.
There is a risk of vehicles being swept away due to flooding and high flow in rivers and canals.

The Authority has advised the public to postpone travel to dangerous areas and avoid unnecessary travel.
The public is advised to move livestock and valuables to safe places and follow the warnings of the concerned agencies.
All relevant agencies, relief teams and district administration are advised to remain in touch at all times and be ready for immediate response.
