The escape of the perpetrators involved in the killing of Sheikh-ul-Hadith Maulana Muhammad Idrees in broad daylight raises serious questions about the performance of police law enforcement agencies in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as it is not a single incident of target killing of religious figures, where the attacker escaping easily.

Several high-profile personalities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa became the victims of target killing, but no arrest was made in the aftermath of the incident, which raised serious questions about the performance of the police and the special branch.  Earlier to this, Maulana Khanzeb of Bajaur was targeted in broad daylight while the assailants made their escape.

After the incident, he was immediately shifted to the hospital, but he died on the way. After the shooting incident, the accused fled the scene. Investigation teams obtained pictures of the attackers with the help of Safe City cameras present at the scene, and the pursuit of the terrorists is underway.

Though Inspector General of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Zulfiqar Hameed has issued orders for the immediate arrest of the accused. He said that according to initial evidence, the incident is a target killing, and the involved elements will be brought to justice soon.

Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sohail Afridi said in his statement that Maulana Muhammad Idrees’ martyrdom is regrettable and that he stands with the family members in this hour of difficulty.

Former Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Sirajul Haq also condemned the incident and expressed his heartfelt condolences and sympathy to the family and all the relatives on this heartbreaking tragedy.

Sirajul Haq said that the deteriorating law and order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is a moment of reflection. The provincial government has the responsibility to ensure the safety of citizens’ lives and property, but such incidents continue to raise questions about the government’s performance.

Maulana Muhammad Idrees’ funeral prayers will be offered today, Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at 5:30 pm in his native village, Tarangzai, Charsadda district. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi and Chief Minister Sohail Afridi expressed deep sorrow over the martyrdom of Maulana Idrees in the murderous attack and sought a report from the top police officials.

Faisal Karim Kundi termed the martyrdom of Sheikh Hadith Maulana Idrees as an irreparable loss to the country. He said that the martyr’s life was being spent in the propagation of religion and promotion of peace. Such scholars are a disgrace to Fitna-ul-Khawarij and Fitna-ul-Hindustan. Maulana’s martyrdom will not go in vain, and the killers will be taught a lesson.
