LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has banned Sri Lankan cricketer Dasun Shanaka for a period of one year, making him ineligible for participation in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) for the coming season. This announcement comes in the wake of Shanaka’s withdrawal from PSL 11 which was seen as a breach of contract on his part.

“Dasun Shanaka had committed himself in favour of participating in the PSL 11 but withdrew from the series. Due to his withdrawal, he will not be eligible to play in PSL 12,” stated an official announcement made by the Pakistan Cricket Board. The announcement further clarified that the decision to take tough measures against him came about because of the breach of contract he made.

“It clearly is a case of violation of the rules and regulations that must be maintained. Upholding the integrity and reputation of the league is our main concern,” explained a spokesman of the PCB.

Shanaka also stated his sorrow over making this choice as a result of the imposed restrictions. According to the statement made by the Sri Lankan cricket player, “I would like to express my deep regret about my withdrawal from the PSL and also sincerely apologize to the people of Pakistan and to all my fans and to the entire cricket fraternity. It is important to note that the PSL is a very prestigious competition, and I realize that I have let everyone down, especially the Lahore Qalandars’ fans.”

Furthermore, Shanaka made it clear that during his withdrawal from the PSL, there was no intention of competing in other tournaments. “I need to say that I hold high regard for the Pakistani fans, and I have always enjoyed playing in the country,” he continued.

The PCB’s decision reflects its commitment to uphold the standards and credibility of the PSL, which continues to be one of the most-watched and respected T20 leagues in the world. Despite Shanaka’s apology, his absence from PSL 12 is expected to be felt, as he was seen as a key player for Lahore Qalandars in the last season.

The ban serves as a reminder to players and teams of the importance of honouring contracts and upholding the spirit of the game. The PCB has yet to announce whether any further actions will be taken or if Shanaka will be considered for future seasons after his one-year suspension.
