Peshawarites face soaring flour prices as government fails to act
Earlier, the price of flour in Peshawar has increased sharply which shows that the government lacks effective control over essential goods and public services. A 20-kg bag of flour which used to cost PKR 1,550, now has a price range between PKR 3,000 and PKR 3,200.
The flour mills together with the sugar traders and the other commodity dealers establish their prices without any regulatory supervision. The critics who examine the administrative system together with the provincial authorities have discovered that both secretaries and commissioners, plus other officers display either ignorance about the current conditions or they work together with influential trade mafias.
The federal government has not taken any action to control prices despite its complaints about supply interruptions which it attributes to Punjab. The local district administrations, including commissioners and deputy commissioners, have not taken any action to intervene in this matter.
Observers note that flour and wheat mafias together with mill owners have earned billions of rupees within just a few days, yet it remains unknown who will receive these profits.
Experts warn that without immediate government action commodity prices will keep increasing which will create more financial difficulties for low-income and vulnerable populations.
