ISLAMABAD: The authorities highlighted a growing public health concern, stating that nearly 40 percent of the country’s population is affected by diabetes or related diseases, with excessive sugar consumption being a major contributing factor.

During a question-hour session in the National Assembly, the government projected that Pakistan’s sugar production for the current year is expected to range between 6.8 and 7 million metric tons.

The rising intake of sugar has negatively impacted public health, leading to a sharp increase in diabetes rates. Health experts have expressed concern that the surge in sugar consumption is also linked to a rise in cardiovascular diseases across the country.

Experts further noted that high sugar intake increases insulin resistance in the body, contributing to a growing number of diabetes cases. The government was urged to raise public awareness and implement measures to control excessive sugar consumption.

In another update, the National Assembly was informed that the government released 781 acres of railway land between July 2024 and June 2025.

Parliamentary Secretary Shahid Usman stated that two protocols had been signed with the Russian Industrial Engineering Corporation to revive production operations at Pakistan Steel Mills.

The steel mills, which have remained non-operational since 2015, will see efforts to restart production on the 700 acres allocated for this purpose.

Member of the National Assembly Sharmila Farooqi highlighted the human impact of the mill closures, noting that 7,709 employees had lost their jobs, causing financial difficulties for many families.

She urged the government to ensure both the revival of the steel mills and the protection of employees’ rights.
