NEW YORK: Pakistan has formally opposed Israel’s declaration of Somaliland as an independent nation. Pakistan also denounced the acts of sending off the Palestinian people as a great injustice, deeming such actions unacceptable.
During an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council, Pakistan’s Deputy Representative to the UN, Usman Jadoon, addressed the Council, declaring strong opposition to Israel’s action of giving recognition to Somaliland. He said that such a decision was a breach of international law and a threat to the peace of the region.
Pakistan’s Firm Stance on Palestinian Rights and Somalia’s Sovereignty
At the same time, Jadoon foresaw that one of the intentions behind Israel’s actions was to force the Palestinians out of Gaza and into Somaliland, an idea Pakistan has a firm negative stand on. He repeated that Pakistan supports Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity at every step and emphasized in a very strong way that Islamabad was against the Palestinians being forcibly displaced. Jadoon, who described Israel’s attitude as irresponsible, called on the entire world to solve the Palestinian issue by a two, state solution as per the UN resolutions. He indicated that the Somali authorities are striving for peace, however, Israel’s operations are causing the region to be thrown back into turmoil.
Breach of International Law
Furthermore, Jadoon claimed that Israel’s move was a very clear breach of international law and that Pakistan would continue to support Somalia’s claim over that piece of land made for the purpose of its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Somaliland’s Declaration of Independence
Israel has made a public pronouncement acknowledging Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state. Not surprisingly, this step has encountered fierce resistance from the Muslim nations that have voiced their serious apprehension about Israel’s moves.
