ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has criticized the jailed Imran Khan, saying he is “making excuses” while in prison and that “crying achieves nothing.”
Addressing a workers’ convention in Sadiqabad, the President said that imprisonment should be faced with courage. He claimed that the PTI founder had once threatened to keep him “at gunpoint” but is now looking for excuses from jail.
Zardari said leadership requires standing with the people and showing humility. “The more you bow before the people, the more respect you receive,” he told party workers.
Highlighting his party’s role in promoting workers, he said that Yousaf Raza Gillani was made prime minister and Makhdoom Ahmed Mahmood was appointed governor because the party believes in bringing forward loyal workers. He added that even an ordinary worker can become a member of the provincial assembly.
Recalling the struggle of Benazir Bhutto, Zardari said she spent years in prison at a young age and remained brave despite hardships. He described her as the daughter of a fearless leader who accepted martyrdom.
The President further stated that “the ownership of Pakistan lies with the Pakistan Peoples Party,” adding that political captains come and go but his party remains steady. He also invited disgruntled Baloch groups to resolve issues through dialogue, saying that this is the time for negotiations, not weapons.
Zardari announced plans for development projects, including the establishment of a university in southern Punjab’s riverine area. He said he would support the creation of a medical university there, adding that as President, he has the authority to grant approval.
