New York’s new mayor, Zahran Mamdani, revoked all executive orders of former mayor Eric Adams that were issued after September 26, 2024, the date after Adams was indicted on bribery and fraud charges.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry has accused New York Mayor Zahran Mamdani of ‘pouring gasoline on the blazing fire of anti-Semitism’ by revoking former mayor Eric Adams’ recent order.
The State Department said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that on his first day as mayor of New York, Mamdani showed his true colors. He revoked the IHRA definition of anti-Semitism and lifted restrictions on boycotting Israel. This is not leadership, but rather pouring gasoline on the blazing fire of anti-Semitism,
However, the Council on American-Islamic Relations and civil liberties organizations welcomed the decision and said that the IHRA definition restricted freedom of expression. Criticism of the Israeli government was wrongly labeled as anti-Semitism.
It should be noted that Mamdani took the oath of office of mayor of New York on the Holy Quran. He was sworn in by a Jewish leader, Senator Bernie Sanders. Several Jewish leaders were present at the swearing-in ceremony.
Mamdani’s first day as mayor portrays him as a bold and reformist mayor, but there is serious concern in pro-Israel circles and major Jewish organizations. Mamdani argues that criticism of Israel and anti-Semitism must be viewed separately.
