When a batsman is out on zero without scoring a run as soon as he starts his innings, it is called a Duck in cricket terminology.

The picture of a duck is also shown on the TV screen on such occasions, but have you ever wondered why being out on zero in cricket is called a Duck? What is the relationship between cricket and Duck? If you don’t know, we will tell you the unique story behind it.

Actually, this term is attributed to the duck egg, because the egg is shaped like a zero. Therefore, when a player is out on a duck, it is also called being out on an egg.

A historic incident occurred in 1866 when the Prince of Wales was out on a duck in a match.

The next day, the newspaper wrote that he returned to the pavilion “riding on a duck’s egg.” This phrase became so popular that after that, every newspaper started using this term and since then the word ‘duck’ has become common in cricket.

Do you know what is a ‘golden’ and ‘diamond’ duck?

We all know that in cricket, if a batter is out on a duck without scoring a run, it is called a duck, i.e. being out on an egg, but if a batter is out on a duck on his first ball, it is called a golden duck. A part from this, the term diamond duck is used when a batter is out on a duck without playing a ball.

This mostly happens when a run out is made at the non-striker’s end, or sometimes when a wide ball is stumped at the striker’s end, it is also considered a diamond duck.

It should be noted that the unique record of being dismissed for zero the most times in ODI cricket is held by former Sri Lankan cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya, who was dismissed for zero 34 times.

Second on this list is former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi, who was dismissed for no runs 30 times in ODI cricket.Every aggressive hitter also receives more ducks in cricket history.
