A historic incident occurred in 1866 when the Prince of Wales was out on a duck in a match.
The next day, the newspaper wrote that he returned to the pavilion “riding on a duck’s egg.” This phrase became so popular that after that, every newspaper started using this term and since then the word ‘duck’ has become common in cricket.

This mostly happens when a run out is made at the non-striker’s end, or sometimes when a wide ball is stumped at the striker’s end, it is also considered a diamond duck.
It should be noted that the unique record of being dismissed for zero the most times in ODI cricket is held by former Sri Lankan cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya, who was dismissed for zero 34 times.
