Why did PMDC declare the National Registration Examination (NRE) mandatory for foreign graduates?
The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council has said that under the PM&DC Act 2022, the council has the authority to review foreign medical institutions and issue provisional registration only to graduates of those registered institutions that are recognised by the PM&DC.
In a statement, the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council has said that NRE is mandatory for foreign graduates because some of the students getting their degrees from those universities which are not registered with PMDC, and this decision has been taken for patient safety, which is the top priority of the PMDC.
The announcement said that provisional registration can only be obtained by graduates of recognised foreign institutions; graduates of unrecognised institutions will first pass the NRE.
According to the announcement, only graduates of Educational Commission for Foreign Medical graduates(ECFMG)listed institutions are eligible for NRE, and the claim that 4000 to 7000 registration cases are pending is false; only 700 cases were pending, and many candidates have adjusted their fees. The NRE exam is in November 2025, the schedule of which will be released soon.
PM&DC has said that there is no compromise on patient safety, and the licensing exam is mandatory in every country of the world.
