A Unique Show of Technical Skill, Physical Strength and Patience, the Hungarian Winning Team Prepared the Grave in 1 Hour 33 Minutes.
A Hungarian team won the 8th International Grave Digging Competition. In which teams from all over the world participated. The competition aimed to honour the common but neglected profession of grave digging and to attract young people to this profession.
This year, too, the Hungarian team “Paracletes Non-Profit” took the field. The two members of the team, Laszlo Kise and Robert Nagy, completed the challenge of digging a grave and filling it cleanly in just 1 hour, 33 minutes, and 20 seconds, and won for the second year in a row.
How does this unique competition work?
Each team consists of two people, and they have to dig a grave measuring 2 meters long, 80 centimetres wide and 1.6 meters deep. The grave is then filled with 2.5 tons of soil, neatly and accurately completed. The judges evaluate the teams on a 10-point scale for speed, cleanliness and accuracy.
Russia was represented in the competition by employees of the Novosibirsk Crematorium, who unfortunately came last. They attributed their poor performance to the intense heat.
What are the objectives of this competition?
The goal of the competition is to respect the services of grave diggers. This unique world championship has been running since 2016; the goal is not just fun or speed, but to acknowledge the profession of gravediggers.
A profession that requires physical strength, precision and mental endurance, but often remains in the background. Organisers say that this competition is not just a “spectacle” but an expression of respect for those who perform silent services in the final journey of life.
