Where is China establishing donkey breeding farms in KP?
A unique investment has come to light in Pakistan, where a Chinese company, Singying, has decided to start work on a donkey breeding project with an investment of $37 million in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Under the project, 40 special farms will be established across the country, while a modern laboratory will also be built at the University of Agriculture in Peshawar to enable the process of breeding on scientific grounds.
According to sources in the Ministry of Food Security, the goal of the project is to produce 80,000 donkeys every year, out of which 10,000 donkey meat and bones will be exported to China every month; however, the sale of donkey meat at the local level will not be allowed.
According to the government’s Agricultural Census Report 2024, the total number of donkeys in Pakistan has reached 4.9 million, of which the largest number of donkeys are found in Punjab province.
According to the data, the number of donkeys in Punjab is 2.4 million, 3 thousand, which is the highest compared to all other provinces. The report states there are Sindh: 1.0 million, 81 thousand, 7 million, 82 thousand, Balochistan: 6 million, 30 thousand, and Islamabad: 4 thousand.
According to the statistics, Sindh is second in the number of donkeys, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is third, and Balochistan is fourth, while the federal capital Islamabad recorded the lowest number of donkeys. Officials say that this project can be helpful in making Pakistan part of the global supply chain of donkeys and opening new trade routes.
