PESHAWAR: The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) on Tuesday released statistics on targets achieved in the water and hydropower sectors during the year 2025.

A statement issued by WAPDA here on Tuesday said that WAPDA supplied 33.12 billion units of hydropower to the National Grid during this year.

It said WAPDA hydropower remained the cheapest source of electricity in the National Grid, with an average cost of Rs. 3.83 per unit. Officials stated that the low-cost hydropower helped subsidise the overall power sector.

It further mentioned that hydropower generation involves zero emissions of toxic and harmful gases, making it an environmentally friendly energy source, particularly important in the context of global climate change.

According to the hydropower statistics for 2025, Tarbela Hydropower Station contributed 14.3 billion units of electricity to the National Grid, while the Tarbela Fourth Extension Project added 5.6 billion units. Ghazi Barotha Hydropower Project supplied 6.5 billion units, and Mangla Hydropower Project contributed 3.6 billion units. Warsak Hydropower Station generated 770 million units, Chashma Hydropower Plant supplied 790 million units, and Khawar, Jinnah, and other small hydropower projects provided a combined 1.56 billion units of electricity.

Despite various challenges, WAPDA achieved key milestones on eight under-construction water and hydropower projects during 2025, including Diamer Bhasha Dam, Mohmand Dam, Dasu Hydropower Project, Tarbela Fifth Extension Project, and the K-IV Water Supply Project. Construction work on all projects continued at a satisfactory pace.

A major milestone was achieved in August 2025 with the start of filling of the main dam at the Mohmand Project. WAPDA announced that RCC work on the main dams of Diamer Bhasha Dam and Dasu Project is expected to commence in 2026.

Upon completion of the eight ongoing projects, the country’s water storage capacity will increase by 9.7 million acre-feet, while hydropower generation capacity is projected to double to about 20,000 megawatts. Completion of Phase I of the K-IV Project will supply 260 million gallons per day of drinking water to Karachi, while the Mohmand Dam will provide 300 million gallons per day of drinking water to Peshawar.
