The US State Department has instructed US citizens in Iran to leave Iran immediately and warned that US citizens in Iran are facing serious risks, including terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, arbitrary arrest, torture and wrongful imprisonment.

The State Department, issuing the latest travel advice for Iran, has said that no one should travel to Iran for any reason because US citizens are facing serious risks there. The US State Department has said that there is no US embassy in Iran, so citizens should leave the country immediately for their safety.

The risks include terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, arbitrary arrest, torture and wrongful imprisonment, and some US citizens have been imprisoned for years on false charges or sentenced to death. Due to the absence of a US embassy in Iran, the Swedish government is working to protect US interests in Tehran. As of October 15, 2025, routine consular services for US citizens in Iran have been suspended, including passport applications, reports of birth abroad, and notary services.

The US State Department has said that US citizens should leave Iran immediately and avoid travel to high-risk areas, and for more information, US citizens can see the guidance provided on its website.
