WASHINGTON: The United States has dispatched a large military force towards Iran, which includes warships, fighter jets and additional troops, according to President Donald Trump, who described the operation as a preventive measure.
Trump confirmed the deployment of troops through his statements to reporters when he travelled on Air Force One because this deployment represented major military equipment.
“We are sending a very strong force towards Iran. The United States is sending multiple ships to that region while we establish military bases close to Iran to protect our interests. President Trump made this statement during his press conference when journalists asked him about his plans.
The US military deployment includes the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and other naval assets and combat aircraft. The military forces are moving to the Middle East because the two nations face increasing tensions which include concerns about Iran’s nuclear program and its capacity to dominate neighbouring states.
Iranian execution plans that President Trump had threatened to punish through military actions earlier in the week resulted in Iran reportedly cancelling its planned executions. Trump explained that the military forces currently stationed at the base do not indicate upcoming military operations.
“We are closely monitoring Iran. The executions received our warning and after the alert we issued, they decided to stop executing their prisoners.” Trump explained.
The US President confirmed that the military display that his government organized should not be interpreted as an indication that the country would start fighting. “Our current situation requires us to take preventive measures which include military preparedness despite our actual non-military activities in this area,” he said.
The United States deploys its military forces at a moment when Washington and Tehran face their most difficult diplomatic crisis because both countries disagree about Iran’s nuclear weapon development. Trump previously announced that the United States would avoid increasing tensions with Iran until that country resumed its nuclear weapons program. The arrival of new troops creates potential for increased hostilities in that region which already requires military deployment.
International observers are monitoring the situation because the United States continues to pressure Iran about its nuclear programs while the US conducts military operations throughout the region.
People are debating whether the military deployment will protect against attacks or it will create new conflict situations that will become bigger than expected. The upcoming days will provide information about whether the safety protocols will stabilize the situation or they will cause greater disputes.
