PESHAWAR: The United States State Department has reached a final decision to permanently close its consulate in Peshawar this week, citing a strategic move to reduce diplomatic expenditures.
According to Associated Press, the consulate currently houses 18 US diplomats, with the annual operational costs of the mission reported to be approximately Rs2.24 billion. Following this decision, the diplomatic office is expected to cease operations within the next few days as Washington prioritises cost-cutting measures.
The closure marks a significant change in the diplomatic presence in the region, as the Peshawar consulate has historically managed various engagements within the province.
