ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Friday predicted that Pakistan’s upper parts to witness heavy snowfall and rain coupled with thunderstorms.
The Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted that the weather will change again in the northern and western parts of the country from Friday, and there is a possibility of rain, thunderstorm and snowfall in higher areas at various places during the weekly holidays.
According to the PMD, a weak western system will enter the western parts of Pakistan on the night of December 12, which may cause light to moderate rain in several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, thunderstorms at places and snowfall in the northern hilly areas.
The PDM said that intermittent rain and snowfall are expected in Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Kohistan, Malakand, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Buner, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir from December 13 to 15.
Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Kurram, Waziristan, Quetta, Ziarat, Zhob, Sherani, Chaman, Pishin, Qila Abdullah, Qila Saifullah and Nushki are also likely to experience the first rain or thunderstorm of the winter season on December 14 and 15.
Drizzle is likely in the plains of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar and Potohar, while light rain and light snowfall are likely in Murree and Galiyat.
Meanwhile, moderate to heavy fog is likely to prevail in the plains of the country, especially Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and upper Sindh, during the nights of December 12 to 16, which may reduce visibility and affect traffic flow.
The Meteorological Department also said that another western system will affect the upper and western parts of the country from December 19, which may bring further changes in the weather.
It may be recalled that in a report released in October, experts had warned that this year the country is likely to experience a more severe cold than in the past several decades. The decrease in temperature in the Pacific Ocean is affecting global weather patterns, which has led to the possibility of more severe weather, especially in the mountainous areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan.
