The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has tightened its social media laws, leading to stricter penalties for anyone who posts, comments on, or shares offensive content. According to media reports, individuals, institutions, or companies can face fines ranging from Dh250,000 to Dh500,000 for publishing such content.

Dubai Police have warned both citizens and expatriates that legal action will be taken against those who damage or insult someone’s reputation on social media.

In some cases, offenders may face prison sentences of one year or longer. Authorities have stated that both fines and imprisonment may be imposed simultaneously, and the same laws apply to reposting offensive content.

Dubai Police and the Public Prosecution have repeatedly emphasized the importance of considering the consequences before sharing any content on social media.

There have been several cases in 2025 and 2026 where individuals were also required to pay civil fines of up to 50,000 dirhams.

It’s important to note that these laws apply not only to public posts but also to WhatsApp, private chats, and even deleted posts, as screenshots can be used as evidence.
