US President Donald Trump has announced that he will meet with the newly elected Mayor of New York City, Zahran Mamdani, in the Oval Office of the White House on Friday.
Trump made this announcement on his social media platform Truth Social. Trump said in his statement that ‘New York City’s Communist Mayor Zahran Kwame Mamdani has requested a meeting. We have agreed that this meeting will take place in the Oval Office on Friday, November 21’.
Mamdani won the mayoral election on November 4, where he defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo. Cuomo ran as an independent with Trump’s support after losing the Democratic nomination.
Trump has been an outspoken critic of Mamdani during the campaign, warning that federal funding could be affected if he wins. Trump has also called him a “crazy communist” and claimed that Mamdani will face “historic” problems in Washington. He has also threatened to arrest Mamdani if he interferes with the federal immigration crackdown.
During his campaign, Mamdani described himself as a social democrat and said he would not bow to Trump’s pressure. In his victory speech, he directly addressed Trump, saying, “Listen, President Trump! You have to go through all of us to get to any of us.”
Mamdani’s spokeswoman, Dora Peck, confirmed in a statement that the meeting had been scheduled. According to the spokesperson, it is standard procedure for the newly elected mayor’s new administration to meet with the president.
He added that the newly elected mayor will discuss the public safety, economic security and affordability agenda that more than a million New Yorkers voted for. In an interview given on Wednesday night, Mamdani said that he had indeed contacted the White House to discuss Trump’s promises that he had made to the people of New York.
On Sunday, Trump told reporters that arrangements were being made for the meeting. He had said that we would work something out because we want things to go well for New York.
