PESHAWAR: Due to the rising tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, the Torkham border has been closed for the second day in a row, leading to a total halt of both cargo and passenger traffic across the border.
The security officials have cited the frequent incidents of firing between the armed forces of Pakistan and Afghanistan as the main reason for the long closure of this important border. As a result of the closure, thousands of trucks carrying goods have been stuck on both sides of the border, which is a significant loss to trade and transit.
The problem started two days back when the Afghan soldiers allegedly opened fire without any provocation at the Pakistani unit stationed at the border. The firing back and forth continued for several hours, which not only made the situation very difficult but also gave reason to the authorities to keep the border closed.
While the authorities are keeping a close watch on the crisis, the question of long-term disruption with the trade and movement across the borders is relying on the absence of a quick solution.
Meanwhile, Chaman border on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border has been completely closed for the second day in a row as a result of the increasing tensions between the two countries.
