Tariffs on 8 agricultural commodities between Pakistan and Afghanistan have been reduced by 60% to 27%, which would contribute to lower prices of these commodities in the local market of both neighbouring countries.
According to customs officials, the commodities exported from Afghanistan include grapes, pomegranates, apples and tomatoes, while the fruits sent from Pakistan to Afghanistan include mangoes, quinoa, bananas and potatoes. The Trade Development Authority of Pakistan has initiated measures for the Chaman zone regarding legal complications. According to TDAP, importers and exporters with a Certificate of Origin can avail a 30% tariff reduction. A Certificate of Origin will be required for the export consignment.
Customs officials say that under the tariff agreement, grapes and pomegranates will be exported from Afghanistan on a large scale, while imports of bananas, mangoes and potatoes from Pakistan will start under the tariff reduction agreement. According to officials, a one-year agreement was signed between the Pak-Afghan Ministries of Industry and Commerce in Kabul last month. The first one-year trial agreement will remain in effect until August 01 next year.
