ISLAMABAD: Muhammad Ali Mirza, a Pakistani Islamic scholar and engineer, said that Pakistan is increasingly taking a hardline approach toward religious intolerance.

While speaking in a private media channel, Engineer Mirza said that there had been a noticeable shift in the State’s policy regarding the allegations of blasphemy. It was frequently done during the 2017 sit-in, when the religion card was used against us in order to gain public interest.

He pointed out that in several cases, individuals convicted by courts were later glorified after their deaths, with their graves turned into shrines and used as sources of income. According to him, the state’s intervention against such practices reflects a more assertive and corrective approach.

Referring to an earlier statement by Field Marshal Asim Munir, Mirza said Pakistan needs to function as a hard state one that responds firmly and decisively to those who challenge its authority. He added that recent actions indicate a practical manifestation of this policy.

Mirza further argued that those opposing any reform or improvement in blasphemy-related laws are, in fact, undermining the true spirit and original purpose of the legislation.

He stressed that misuse of religious laws not only harms society but also weakens the moral and legal foundations they are meant to protect.
