ISLAMABAD: A major development has emerged in the Smart Phones for All initiative, where consultations between the Ministry of IT, PTA, and telecom companies have been completed.

According to media reports, all involved parties have agreed to create a comprehensive framework for providing mobile phones on instalments. The Ministry of IT has also prepared a policy directive on the matter.

It’s worth noting that the Smart Phone for All project was introduced in November 2022.

Reports indicate that telecom operators had expressed concerns over financial risks and legal issues. To address these concerns, it has been decided that if a user fails to make installment payments, their mobile and telecom services will be suspended, and the PTA will also have the authority to block the user’s mobile phone.

However, the government rejected the proposal to cut off all financial services of defaulters, as this authority lies with the State Bank.

The official from the Chinese Telecom Company indicated that although there have been some rejected proposals, the operators will not stand in the way of the advancement of the project. In addition, defaulter will not gain access to other service providers, and as soon as the policy directive is released, all will comply with it.

It was also reported that Chinese telecom companies have begun contacting mobile phone manufacturers to ensure a faster and more efficient supply of smartphones.

It is expected that once the Ministry of IT issues the policy, the project will come into effect, offering consumers the opportunity to acquire smartphones on easy instalments.

Govt introduces stricter smartphone purchase rules with new policy

Earlier, the Government of Pakistan has introduced a new policy regarding the purchase of smartphones, setting stricter standards for performance and security. The policy aims to ensure that only high-quality, secure devices are used within the country.

The National Information Technology Board (NITB) requests approximately 24000 Android smartphones that need to meet specific technical requirements. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) will require all devices to obtain complete approval to stop people from using unregistered or substandard phones.

The policy requires smartphones to demonstrate modern performance capabilities together with advanced security functions. The policy identifies three essential elements which include data protection measures and secure communication methods and appropriate software solutions for government operations.

The new regulations require all phones to be brand-new because used or refurbished devices create security vulnerabilities. The process ensures that all acquired devices meet established quality standards.

The policy serves as a part of Pakistan’s comprehensive strategy to enhance government technology implementation and improve cybersecurity measures and create unified digital systems. The new regulations will improve government institutions’ performance while establishing a safer and more efficient digital governance framework.
