ISLAMABAD: A groundbreaking study has shifted the blame of obesity from solely lifestyle choices to genes, thus mending a hole in the understanding of the disease.

The researchers have identified the genes that contribute to the risk of obesity, out of which five potential genes are the ones that have never been recognized before.

By the way, obesity is capable of causing a wide spectrum of diseases like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and osteoarthritis.

The research published in Nature Communications, was a meta-analysis of more than 850,000 individuals from six continents and its results indicated 13 genes associated with ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌obesity.

Among these genes, eight had already been identified in the previous research, while the remaining five, namely YLPM1, RIF1, GIGYF1, SLC5A3, and GRM7, were newly found for the first time.

The team of scientists considers that the discovery of these genes can lead to the invention of new remedies that would be able to regulate the functions of such genes and, in this way, alleviate the condition of obesity.

They argue that revelations like this, which are rarely possible when the genetic research is limited to a single population, contribute to a more global and profound understanding of obesity’s genetic ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌factors.
