ISLAMABAD: Authorities have blocked multiple major roads in Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Islamabad after a religious group announced plans to hold a protest rally, triggering widespread disruptions across the twin cities.

The protest call caused severe traffic congestion, halting normal city operations and affecting essential services. Containers were placed on key routes including the Lahore-Islamabad Motorway and GT Road, leading to massive traffic jams.

In Lahore, major entry and exit points such as Babu Sabu and Thokar Niaz Baig were sealed, while all routes leading to Islamabad via the motorway were also closed. The Chenab River Bridge in Gujrat was among several other crossings that were shut down.

Public transport was also hit hard — the Orange Line Train service in Lahore was suspended as a precaution, leaving commuters stranded. Areas along GT Road, including Muridke, Channab Nagar, and Gujrat, faced complete closures due to the placement of containers.

Amid growing tensions, schools in Lahore were ordered to close early at 11 a.m., while the University of the Punjab postponed all scheduled exams until further notice.

The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province for ten days, prohibiting public gatherings of more than four people. However, religious activities, weddings, and funerals are exempt from the ban. Authorities also enforced a strict prohibition on the public display of weapons.

Mobile Internet Services Suspended

The Ministry of Interior directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to suspend mobile internet services in Islamabad and Rawalpindi from midnight, with no specified timeline for restoration.

Disruptions in Legal Proceedings

The Islamabad High Court Bar Association expressed concern over road closures preventing lawyers from reaching the court. It urged that if any lawyer fails to appear, no adverse action should be taken in their absence.

Traffic Diversion Plan

The Islamabad Traffic Police announced a diversion plan to manage road closures. Routes from 26 Number Chowk, Rawat, and Faizabad leading to the capital have been blocked, with alternate routes designated for commuters. Heavy vehicles have been barred from entering Islamabad on October 10, and traffic diversions have been mapped out accordingly.

Suspension of Public Transport

Public transport operations in both cities have been largely suspended. The Islamabad Metro Bus service and electric bus network have halted operations temporarily. Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel until the situation normalises.

Heightened Security Measures

Security forces have been deployed across the twin cities, with aerial monitoring in place to ensure law and order. Authorities continue to assess the situation and are prepared to take further action if required.
