Members of the Jamrud Tehsil Council have staged a massive protest against the Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA) at Bab-e-Khaybar, a historic site in Jamrud.
In this protest, councilors and local representatives have expressed serious concerns about the performance and administrative affairs of the TMA and have put forward several important demands.
The key demands of the protesters include Presentation of the 8-year audit report: The biggest demand of the protesters is that the complete audit report of the funds received by TMA Jamrud and its expenditure during the last eight years be made public. They allege that there have been large-scale irregularities in the funds.
The councilors demanded that only local youth of Jamrud be recruited for the vacant posts in TMA so that unemployment in the area can be eliminated.
The protesters say that the non-local staff deployed in TMA Jamrud should be replaced immediately and local officials should be given a chance in their place.
Due to the absence of a permanent Tehsil Municipal Officer (TMO) in Jamrud for a long time, administrative affairs have come to a standstill. The protesters demanded the immediate appointment of a regular and permanent officer.
Protests were also held against the poor sanitation system, shutdown of street lights and non-availability of clean drinking water in Jamrud Bazaar and its surroundings.
Addressing the protest, members of the Tehsil Council said “TMA Jamrud has become a hotbed of corruption. We have been elected by the people, but we do not have the authority and funds to clean or install lights in our areas. Our protest will continue until the eight years are plane accounted for and the locals.
The protesters also held a symbolic sit-in by blocking the road in front of Bab-e-Khayber, which affected the flow of traffic on the Pak-Afghan Highway. They warned the government that if their demands were not accepted, they would expand the scope of this protest to the entire district.
