There is a long-standing demand of the political and social circles and the common citizens of Buner that the district of Buner should be connected to the Swat Expressway through a regular interchange or link road. The people are of the opinion that Swat, Dir and Chitral have benefited from this project, but Buner has been ignored, due to which the marble industry and tourism here are being badly affected.
After the protests and demands of the people of Buner, the government has assured to speed up the work on the Karakar Tunnel. This 3-km-long tunnel will play a key role in bringing Buner closer to the Swat Expressway.
According to reports from February 2026, the release of funds for the project and supervision of construction work have been tightened.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has also started work on the feasibility of Swat Expressway Phase 2 as well as such link roads that will directly connect Buner’s headquarters, Dagar, to the motorway network.
The Marble Association of Buner has warned the government that the lack of a link to the expressway has caused a huge increase in transport costs, which is affecting the livelihood of thousands of families.
The “National Jirga” of Buner and other organizations have made several appealed in recent months. They say that they will continue their protests until the link road or tunnel to connect Buner to the Swat Expressway is practically completed.
The government has assured that the inclusion of Buner in the next phases of the Swat Expressway will be prioritized so that economic prosperity can be brought to the region.
