ISLAMABAD: A recent study has brought to light worries regarding the effects of smartphones on kids younger than 12, connecting early use of these gadgets with various health problems such as obesity, depression and sleep disturbances.

The study, featured in the Journal of Paediatrics, examined information from than 10,000 children aged 12 and younger. The research revealed that kids who received smartphones on faced a considerably greater chance of experiencing physical and mental health issues than those with restricted or no exposure, to these gadgets.

The study indicates that one of the significant risks of early smartphone usage is obesity. It was discovered that kids with smartphones tend to be inactive for longer periods as they sit, and use their devices, therefore, their physical activity is very ​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌limited. Additionally,​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ the study pointed out that mobile phones disrupt sleep cycles that a large number of kids suffer from sleeplessness or sleep of low-quality which in turn worsen their health.

Scientists pointed out that the first 12 years of a child’s life are crucial for their emotional development. Providing kids with mobile phones at this period might have a very negative effect on their physical and mental health eventually of which may be depression, anxiety and ​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌isolation.

Although the study did not explore the causes of these health issues earlier research has demonstrated that smartphone use can disrupt social engagement, physical activity and diminish sleep quality all essential elements for a child’s health. Kids who often use smartphones tend to spend time playing outdoors exercising or socializing face-to-face with friends, activities that support improved mental and physical well-being.

The principal investigator of the study stated that although smartphones can provide advantages such, as learning applications the dangers of use exceed any possible benefits. “Handing a smartphone to a child requires consideration of their well-being. These gadgets are created to be habit-forming and for youngsters this can result in lasting effects ” the investigator noted.

Extended​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ screen time has been associated, through this study and other additional studies, with the development of cardiometabolic disorders that include high blood pressure, cholesterol problems, and insulin resistance. These health issues are primarily responsible for the eventual increased risk of diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes, that may occur in old age.

The research reported in the Journal of the American Heart Association in August 2025, focused on the children between 10 to 18 years old, in a very detailed manner. It came to the conclusion that teenagers and children, who excessively used screens, were more likely to get metabolic and cardiovascular ​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌diseases.

Medical professionals advise that kids under 13 should not be given a smartphone. Long usage can damage their mental health quite drastically. Studies indicate that using a smartphone at an early stage may lead to low self-esteem, the inability to control one’s emotions, and even having suicidal ​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌thoughts.
