PESHAWAR: The first day of Ramzan brings a sharp rise in prices for essential items, including fruits and vegetables and other necessary goods in the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to the market sources, the strawberries are sold at 1,000 PKR per kilogram and pomegranates at 600 PKR and apples at 500 PKR and guavas at 300 PKR per kilogram.

The price of bananas has now reached 250 PKR per dozen which creates more financial challenges for shoppers. The traders are expected to increase prices during Ramzan in addition to increasing chicken prices which have gone up by 30 PKR to reach 380 PKR per kilogram.

The steep price hikes for essential food items during the holy month have created additional economic challenges which make it harder for ordinary citizens to afford basic food items.

Broiler chicken prices rise as Ramazan begins

Meanwhile, the price of broiler meat has risen in the city’s open market. Following an increase of Rs 14, the price of chicken meat has gone up from Rs 461 to Rs 475 per kilogram. However, citizens are experiencing some relief in the Ramadan markets, where chicken meat is being sold for Rs 460 per kilogram.

According to official pricing for broilers, the farm rate for live broilers is set at Rs 300 per kilogram, while the wholesale rate is established at Rs 314 per kilogram.

In contrast, the price of eggs has decreased, with eggs now being sold at Rs 236 per dozen, down by Rs 14.
