The historic Kapoor Haveli in Peshawar’s Dhaki Munawar Shah area reportedly sustained minor damage during the 6.2-magnitude earthquake that struck the Hindu Kush region last night.
While the structure remains standing, the tremors have exacerbated existing cracks in its fragile facade.
The ancestral home of Bollywood icon Raj Kapoor has been in a precarious state for decades. Local residents in the narrow lanes near Qissa Khwani Bazaar have noted that the vibration from the quake further weakened the already decaying wooden balconies and brick masonry.
Although the top floors were partially removed years ago to prevent a total collapse, the building remains a significant safety concern for the surrounding neighborhood during seismic events.
Last night’s earthquake, occurring at approximately 9:13 PM PST many residents of the old city into the streets. While no major casualties were reported in Peshawar, the event highlights the ongoing vulnerability of heritage sites like the Haveli.
Despite past discussions regarding its conversion into a museum, the building continues to deteriorate due to legal hurdles and the lack of a formal restoration plan.
