AFGHANISTAN: At least 17 people have been killed and 11 injured in Afghanistan following heavy rains and snowfall after a prolonged drought.
Media reports say in the Kabkan district of Herat province, five individuals, including two children, lost their lives when the roof of a house collapsed. Mohammad Yousuf Saeedi, a spokesman for the Herat governor, reported that the deceased were all members of the same family.
According to Mohammad Yousuf Hammad, a spokesman for the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority, most of the fatalities were in districts affected by flooding since Monday. Hammad stated that the floods have damaged infrastructure, resulted in the deaths of livestock, and impacted approximately 1,800 families.
Videos shared on social media depicted a truck overturning on the Herat-Kandahar highway, as well as a bus stuck in heavy floodwaters, with victims attempting to save themselves.
Furthermore, the floods have impeded relief efforts for earthquake victims in Nangarhar province.
