RAWALPINDI: A demonstration organized by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) at the Factory Checkpoint close to Adiala Jail was forcefully broken up by the police leading to clashes.
The police deployed water cannons to disperse the crowd as protesters threw stones back, at them. Multiple PTI members were detained in the course of the crackdown.
The demonstration was arranged after PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar and the sisters of PTI founder Imran Khan were not permitted to visit him. Upon being blocked from entering the prison the sisters, among them Aleema Khan spearheaded the protest, at the Factory Checkpoint.
Reports indicate that the demonstration intensified when the police stopped Imran Khan’s sisters leading Aleema Khan to call on the activists to stay composed and withdraw from the checkpoint. With her appeal hostilities increased and clashes erupted between the demonstrators and law enforcement.
Amidst the turmoil Member of National Assembly (MNA) Shahid Khattak tumbled into a drain as he tried to save fellow activist Azma Khanum. As, per journalist Hassnain Rafiq’s tweet Khattak suffered an injury fracturing his leg during the fall. His wound intensified the instability of the scenario.

After the deployment of water cannons and intense clashes between law enforcement and protesters the mood, at the demonstration location continued to be strained. Extra units of police were brought in to disperse the crowd and handfuls of protestors were taken into custody.
Police resorted to water cannons to douse the demonstrators and the arrested people who were hit by the chilling water, responded by escalating the fracas.
Officials have attempted to control the situation. The intense standoff, between law enforcement and PTI supporters keeps intensifying. The protests and the resulting clashes highlight the escalating volatile situation between the PTI leaders and the people who support them.
After such an event, people closely follow the developments and are eager to know what the demands of the protesters are and what will be the next move of the police.
