The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has warned SIM users that using numbers registered in someone else’s name is illegal and poses significant risks.

According to the PTA, every SIM must be registered in the name of the individual who actually uses it. Using a SIM registered under another person’s CNIC constitutes a clear violation of telecom regulations.

The PTA has clarified that any misuse of a SIM is the responsibility of the registered owner. This includes all activities such as calls, text messages, internet usage, and any illegal activities associated with that number.

The authority emphasized that users are individually accountable for all actions carried out through their SIMs or connected devices. Failure to comply with these regulations may result in enforcement actions.

The PTA encourages telecom consumers to act responsibly to help protect the security and stability of Pakistan’s telecom system, stating that responsible use benefits everyone.

This warning comes as incidents of mobile-based financial fraud and harassment continue to rise. In many cases, SIM owners later claim they were not involved, asserting that someone else was using their number.

Pakistan has a population of over 250 million people and approximately 196 million active SIMs, indicating that many users possess multiple numbers. According to PTA regulations, one CNIC can be linked to up to five voice SIMs and three data SIMs for personal use.
