The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has warned social media users to refrain from publishing and transmitting hateful, defamatory or misleading content.
A statement issued by the PTA said that users should immediately remove such content and should also avoid becoming part of any misleading campaign or narrative. The statement further said that engaging in such activities on social media that harm national integrity or harm the honor and dignity of state institutions and individuals is unacceptable.
The PTA clarified that intentionally spreading false information or harming someone’s reputation is a punishable offense under the Pakistan Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), and it is a national duty for users to adopt a responsible digital behavior. The authority warned that in case of violation of the law, action will be taken without discrimination.
