DHAKA: Protests in Bangladesh have been escalating over the past few days, intensively to the extent that the demonstrators are now directly attacking the Indian High Commission and the political offices of the Awami League party.

The violent outbreak of the protests followed the death of the youth political leader Sharif Osman Hadi who was fatally shot in the attack. A large crowd of protesters showed up at the Indian High Commission in Dhaka and they made sure that their anger and frustration were heard.

The demonstrators first targeted the location where the incident occurred and after a while, it turned into a massive anti-India campaign. The protesters walked the streets screaming at India, blaming it for meddling in the political scene of Bangladesh. There is a faction within the protesters that regards India as the perpetrator of the assassination of Hadi since he was very vocal about the Indian policies and actions.

Protests Outside Awami League Offices

Simultaneously, the crowd pelted the Awami League party’s office with stones, accusing the government of being stooges and cheerleaders in the attack on Hadi, as well as the masterminds behind the shooting.

Protesters stormed party offices igniting fires, destroying properties, and in Dhaka, they set up blockades on the main streets. A few skirmishes between protesters and security forces were reported, the situation there was very volatile. The loss of a leader commonly known as a voice of the youth in the country, the demonstrators’ anger was supreme, and they insisted on the need for justice at the same time.

“I can tell you we will not halt our movements until those guilty of Hadi’s death are held accountable.” This is a classic point of his support against the government and for the rest of us who want this country to change,” of a protester.

Violence Spreads to Other Cities

However, the protests were initially planned in the capital but they managed to expand to other cities.

Rajshahi is one of the cities that have seen widespread protests and people’s unrest following which the destruction of government buildings and public places have occurred there. The protests that are unfolding have become a heavy burden for the interim government which has been criticized for its incompetence.

Since the protests became more violent, security forces have been stationed in areas on the streets and near the Indian High Commission and Awami League offices.

Although the government has appealed for peace, the protests continue to take place. The police attacked the protestors and hence the use of tear gas was reported whenever the rumbles made the field empty.

The protests have been going on for a long time and they are becoming more and more significant, and at the same time, the majority of the population is worried that there will be even more incidents of violence if the situation goes on like ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌this.
