PESHAWAR: Following the constitutional practice, the Chief Minister in office will hand over his resignation to the Governor of the province. The Governor has 48 hrs to accept or dismiss this resignation. The resignation is automatically accepted in case no decision is made within the said period.

When the resignation has been accepted, the provincial cabinet, headed by the Chief Minister, will be dissolved.

Then, a meeting of the parliamentary party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) that has a majority in the provincial assembly, will be conducted to select a new Chief Minister.

The next step will be to invite a session in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly by the Speaker, after which the House will vote a vote of confidence to the new Chief Minister. The chosen MPA will have to pass a simple majority to be declared as the new Chief Minister of the province.

The KP Assembly has 145 members, and therefore, the candidate will require at least 73 votes to acquire an office. The PTI is well placed with more than the required votes.
