ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday announced the immediate restoration of domestic gas connections across Pakistan, marking the fulfillment of a long-standing public demand.

Speaking at a ceremony held to commemorate the reopening of gas connections, the premier said, “Today, the government has decided to resume gas supply for domestic consumers nationwide.”

He recalled that when the PDM coalition assumed office in 2022, the government faced intense pressure to issue gas connections but was constrained by severe supply shortages. “At that time, we had to turn down requests from citizens because there simply wasn’t enough gas available,” he said.

The prime minister noted that while several gas infrastructure projects, including pipelines and networks, had been approved and funded in the past, the lack of supply had hindered progress. “Now, high-quality regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) connections are being provided to households across the country,” he added.

Calling it “a day of joy,” Prime Minister Shehbaz revealed that hundreds of thousands of applications have already been received, linking the milestone to the energy reforms initiated under former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

“When Nawaz Sharif assumed office in 2013, the country was battling up to 20-hour power outages and widespread darkness,” he said.

Concluding his address, the prime minister congratulated coalition partners and the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) team for making the restoration of domestic gas connections a reality.
