WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has agreed to suspend military action against Iran for two weeks, following talks with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan and Field Marshal Asim Munir. The decision is contingent on the Islamic Republic of Iran’s commitment to the complete, immediate, and safe opening of the Strait of Hormuz.

“I agree to wait for a total of two weeks without deploying the destructive military power being deployed against Iran tonight based on the conversation with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir of Pakistan,” Trump clarified in an official statement.

It will be a double-sided ceasefire, according to Trump, as there will no need for the U.S. to deploy any more forces since they already met and surpassed their objectives. Furthermore, there are great advancements made toward achieving a long-term peace deal with Iran based on a 10-point proposal that the latter has presented which the U.S. government finds workable.

“This gives me assurance that we have already taken giant strides towards solving the problems between the two countries in the past,” Trump added.
